Which tool do I need?

BRAN Analysis – useful to consider the possible outcomes of a choice or change.

Dot Voting – useful for prioritising ideas and making decisions. Use this when you want to give people an equal voice in decision making.

Driver Diagram – helpful for visualising the ‘drivers’ or forces behind your improvement effort. What needs to happen in order to reach your improvement? Driver diagrams can help you understand the current system and theme the ideas that you want to test.

Empathy Map – helpful to better understand the experiences and attitudes of another person or group (e.g., patients). Can help you determine how best to work with a group.

Fishbone Diagram – useful to identify the different factors contributing to a problem and determine where improvements can be made.

Forcefield Analysis – helpful for understanding the positive and negative factors that may help or impede a change. Use this when deciding whether or not to go ahead with a change idea.

Pareto Chart – a useful way to display your data to show where improvement efforts will have the most impact.

PDSA Cycles – a structured process of testing out change ideas by working through planning, doing, studying, and acting phases. Following an approach like this increases the chance of a change being successful.

Prioritisation Matrix – a visual tool to decide where best to focus your improvement efforts. Use this to identify changes that are ‘quick wins’ (low effort but high impact).

Process Map – a visual way of displaying a current process. Use this to identify where the process could be improved e.g., increase efficiency or reduce waste.

Run Chart – a way of displaying data to demonstrate changes across a period of time.

Stakeholder mapping – helps to identify and categorise stakeholders depending on their influence/power. Helps you decide how you will communicate with people impacted by a change.

The 5 Why’s – a technique to better understand the root cause of a problem or incident. Can be used in combination with the Fishbone Diagram.
