Jo Bennett - Associate Director for Quality Improvement and Safety
With varied experience in both the voluntary sector and the NHS. She has worked regionally in the Cancer Network and as a planner at Board level. Her interest is in QI, clinical engagement and being able to demonstrate improvements year on year from service to Board. Her experience of improvement coaching is on a team and individual basis at all levels and she trained as an Improvement Advisor with IHI in 2012.
Dr Nikki Maran - Consultant Anaesthetist & AMD for Patient Safety
Her clinical interest is in anaesthesia for emergency general and vascular surgery. She was appointed Associate Medical Director for Patient Safety in NHS Lothian in Oct 2011. As medical lead for patient safety, she is involved in building capacity for improvement in safety by engaging clinicians, supervising and delivering training for doctors, dentists, nurses and other AHPs in safety and human factors. Nikki completed the IHI Improvement Advisors course through HIS in 2014. Nikki was one of the original co-directors of the Scottish Clinical Simulation Centre, which first opened in Stirling in 1997 and was centre director from 2004-2012. Interested in Human Factors and behavioural aspects of performance, she has been involved in the development of the Anaesthetic (ANTS), surgical (NOTSS) and scrub practitioners (SPLINTS) non-technical skills behavioural marker systems for use within the operating room. She is a member of the Patient Safety Board of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and of the standing group of the Clinical Human Factors Group.
Carolyn Swift - Quality and Safety Improvement Lead
Carolyn started her nursing career in Aberdeen in 1984 as a Registered General Nurse. She has since worked in various specialties and hospitals in NHS Lothian e.g. MOE, HDU, ITU, surgical wards, community and treatment rooms. Carolyn also qualified as a Registered Midwife (Lothian College) and has completed a BSc in Advanced Nursing & Financial Planning at Queen Margaret University. She started in the QI Department, on the first day of the launch of the SPSP in 2008 and qualified as an Improvement Advisor, trained by the IHI in 2011 whilst also working as a QI Facilitator. She has worked at a national level with HIS and NES and has been part of a variety of Lothian improvement projects. One of her projects won the NHS Scotland Safety Award which led to a study bursary – this entailed visits to Toyota in Wales and other external High Reliability Organisations. She was Service Improvement Manager at SJH before returning to QIST as Quality & Safety Improvement Lead and Patient Safety Programme Manager.
Julia Mackel - Quality and Safety Improvement Manager
I am HCPC registered and I have 20 years clinical background working in Dietetics within Acute and PC. I carried out a scoping project and funding proposal for Dietetics and I was founding Team Lead for a PanLothian Dietetic service providing care for patients at home receiving enteral tube feeding. My QI journey started by looking at improvements which could be made within my local service and I have completed Lean in Lothian, Delivering Leadership Excellence Programme for AHPs. I carried out a 2 year project to implement Releasing Time to Care to AHP services in Lothian which implements a continuous improvement model to clinical services. I have recently completed Lean Green Belt and I have also had the privilege to complete ScIL. My current role within the QI department supports the work of the SPSP and has included leading on the Deteriorating Patient workstream. I have been involved with the Academy by facilitating groups and coaching individuals. My passion is to continually improve patient care and look to continue to support clinical staff to make improvements in their clinical areas
Linda Conway - Quality and Safety Improvement Manager
Linda qualified as a Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife, graduated with a BSc in Nursing and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education.
As a nurse Linda worked within acute medicine specializing in coronary care nursing. This led onto the post of Health Discharge Manager and the opportunity to study with the Open University and Royal College of Nursing. Linda then became Lead Clinical Facilitator for Leading Better Care with a specific role remit of implementation of Clinical Quality Indicators working closely with a number of other national programmes including the SPSP. Linda also facilitated and supported a number of other leadership programmes within NHS Lothian. Working in collaboration with NHS Education for Scotland Linda and colleagues facilitated ‘valuing feedback’ master classes in a number of Health Boards across Scotland which resulted in the publication of an article in the Journal of Research in Nursing. Linda qualified as a professional coach through the International Coach Federation and actively coaches through the internal coach bank. Prior to her current post Linda was Team Manager for Patient Experience
Eleanor Morrison - Quality Improvement Facilitator
Eleanor works with QIST which supports the SPSP, a Scottish Government initiative managed by HIS. Eleanor is a Registered General Nurse, Certified Midwife and BSc in Public Health Nursing. Whilst working in the community Eleanor was able to undertake a series of roles within Health Visiting such as Community CPR Trainer, Community Breastcare Facilitator and Team Coordinator.
As Team Coordinator successfully completing NHS Lothian Management Course resulting in the introduction of new community services such as; the Community Phlebotomy Service, Community Nursing for the frail elderly, Nurse led Anti Coagulate Clinic and Childhood and Flu Vaccination service to the GP practice. This involved formulating appropriate job descriptions, clinical protocols, supervision and PDPR for the practice nursing staff. Developing appropriate training programmes and undertaking staff supervision and PDPR. By using the Community Development model she has worked collaboratively with charities and social services in setting up local initiatives such as Ethnic Parenting Groups, Toy Libraries, Stop Smoking Groups and Healthy Eating Groups; sharing this joint working at national conferences. Latterly, Eleanor has worked in specific NHS Lothian Projects such as eKSF as Management Representative, eHealth Community TRAK as Clinical Advisor and Discharge Planning. During which she completed Certificate in Training, LEAN training and Prince 2 project management and MBA in Healthcare from QMU, respectively. Within her current role Eleanor has undertaken Improvement Skills training enabling her to work proactively with healthcare teams to embrace innovative practice and enable clinical staff to experience the value of continuous improvement as a method of managing risk and ensuring quality care.
Caroline Steven - Quality Improvement Facilitator
I am a NMC registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Adult Health nursing. I have had a number of roles since qualifying including: staff nurse within Acute Medicine of the Elderly, Manual Handling Advisor, Patient Safety Co-ordinator (Paediatrics’) and my current role as Quality Improvement Facilitator. I obtained 2 postgraduate level modules ‘Education in Action 1 & 2’ during my time as Manual Handling Advisor. My QI journey started as part of my work as a Quality Improvement Facilitator within the QI support team. I work closely with clinical teams to support the delivery of the key Patient Safety essentials as set out within the Scottish Patient Safety Programme. I am also very lucky to have had the opportunity to undertake the NES Scottish Improvement Leaders (ScIL) programme, having successfully graduated in October 2016. I look forward to further applying this learning within my day job, and supporting the organisation to develop its QI capacity.
Jacqui Pringle - Quality Improvement Facilitator
I am a NMC registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Adult Health nursing. I started my nursing career as a staff nurse working in a specialist brain injury unit, during this time I completed post graduate modules in brain injury. My commitment and enthusiasm to produce better outcomes led to my successful completion of the Violence and Aggression Link Trainer course. My confidence and ability to teach others gave me the necessary skills to join the Quality Improvement Support Team as a facilitator. I am the Quality Improvement (QI) Facilitator for community nursing in NHS Lothian, tasked with building capacity and capability for QI, primarily within the framework of the Scottish Patient Safety Programme. I provide support and coaching to District Nursing teams and community hospitals.
I completed the Scottish Improvement Skills Course in 2015 and most recently NES Scottish Improvement Leaders programme. These courses offered me the chance to build on my existing knowledge of improvement science to increase my confidence coaching frontline staff.
Joan-Marie Sutherland - Quality Improvement Facilitator
I qualified from Queen Margaret University College with a BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy and have gained 15 years clinical experience in both the acute and community settings. I have worked in a variety of clinical specialities including Medicine of the Elderly, Orthopaedics, Amputees, Stroke and Acute Medicine. I previously worked as a Falls Coordinator from 2010 to 2012 – the main aim of this post was to scope, lead and develop the hospital falls prevention service. It was during this time that I started to develop an understanding and gain experience in Quality Improvement. This opportunity also allowed me to develop skills in change management and I enjoyed working with clinicians to support them with improvement in their clinical areas. I have completed the NHS Lothian Delivering Leadership Excellence programme for AHP’s and the project work from this was continued through a Career Fellowship to establish an effective training programme for AHP staff to develop their knowledge and skills about QI. My current role as a Quality Improvement Facilitator within the Quality Improvement Support Team supports the work of the Scottish Patient Safety Programme (SPSP). I have recently completed the NHS Lothian Quality Academy Skills programme and I hope to share my learning with others - always aiming to empower staff with the necessary skills to make improvements in their clinical areas.
Katy Williams - Quality Improvement Facilitator
My background is in Project Management and Dataset development. I worked in Information Services, NSS for 11 years in the Data Management Team working on various projects developing and implementing national clinical information systems and datasets. This included various skills such as project management, training, business analysis and data management.
I started my role here as Quality Improvement Facilitator within the QI Support team in January 2016 covering the RIE. I work closely with clinical teams to support the delivery of the key Patient Safety essentials as set out within the Scottish Patient Safety Programme. I was offered the great opportunity to undertake the Scottish Improvement Leaders (ScIL) course which I am nearing completion and really enjoying. I am already seeing the benefits of this in my everyday job as a QI facilitator.
Irene Corcoran - Falls Co-ordinator
Since qualifying as a nurse in 1980 I have worked in a variety of areas across different sites. Latterly as Night Co-ordinator at the RVH and DCN in ward 51 at the WGH. I spent some time on secondment as Clinical Supervisor for return to practice nurses then moved to the a non-registered work force education team supporting TCSW’s to achieve their SVQ qualification. Following some time facilitating the ‘Releasing time to Care’ programme I returned to clinical practice. In this role as part of QIST, I support teams working with inpatients across all sites, to ensure that appropriate falls risk management strategies, policies and protocols are being implemented effectively and equitably. We support teams of nurses, AHP’s and medical staff with local and site based education which we link to national and local learning (from adverse events). I completed the Scottish Improvement Skills Course in 2017 which helps me support the work of the SPSP falls work-stream. I have been involved with the development of the care rounding, top to toe video, Learn-Pro for falls in the Adult patient and the falls policy
Elaine Reid - Falls Co-ordinator
I am an NMC registered nurse with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing Studies. Following a career in nursing I worked in the Orthopaedic trauma unit and hip fracture audit at the old RIE. After a brief spell as a community nurse, working predominantly with patients over 75 years I returned to the AAH to work as a liaison nurse assisting patients on discharge to settle into the community following orthopaedic rehabilitation.
Having worked predominantly with the older person and those who have suffered falls it was an inevitable transition into working to help prevent and manage falls in the hospital setting as a Falls Co-ordinator. In this role I work with QIST to ensure that appropriate falls risk management strategies, policies and protocols are being implemented effectively and equitably within all care settings and management structures. I also contribute a specialist resource and support (including training and education) to health and social care professionals.

Wendy Ford - Quality Improvement Facilitator
Wendy is a QI Facilitator focusing on data analysis within the Team. She is responsible for submitting the SPSP data to HIS, the Team’s regular monthly reporting on priorities such as Cardiac Arrest, Pressure Ulcer, Falls and dealing with ad hoc data requests. She maintains and runs reports from the Cardiac Arrest/2222 Calls database which the Resus Officers populate. Wendy is involved in helping out on the Quality Improvement Database System (QiDS) Helpdesk and liaising with the company who developed and maintain QiDS. Wendy joined the Department as a Clinical Audit Project Officer in 1999. Prior to that she completed a MA (Hons) in Psychology at Dundee University and worked as Clerical Officer and Medical Secretary at Family Planning & Well Woman Services and as a Research Assistant with Edinburgh University. Whilst completing her MSc in IT (Medical Informatics) at Glasgow University she worked as a Medical Secretary in Dermatology at RIE.
