Following an introduction from Chief Executive Tim Davison, Simon Edgar set out the plans for establishing NHS Lothian's clinical quality approach.

Simon gave an insight into how NHS Lothian had reached this point as well as providing an overview of how the quality academy and quality programme would support the work that is already underway across the organisation to improve care and outcomes for patients.

The key focus initially will be on high volume, high cost processes or pathways.

Three pathways have been selected to pilot the quality approach - stroke, day case chemotherapy and psychological therapies. These will give NHS Lothian the opportunity to apply skills that are already available within the organisation, identify gaps, learn from and develop the methodology before the approach is rolled out to other areas.

The development of a choosing wisely policy for NHS Lothian was outlined by Caroline Whitworth.

The event also heard three presentations from areas considered to be exemplars in clinical practice.
