The purpose of the Planning for Quality course is to give participants the understanding, tools and skill necessary to lead and conduct clinical practice improvement aligned to our overall aims; use QI methods to manage and integrate clinical and non-clinical processes; implement quality improvement programmes; and conduct in-house quality improvement training for NHS Lothian staff.  It is aimed at staff who lead teams of people or coordinate care services within the organisation.

The course will facilitate links and collaboration with other national improvement programmes and networks to promote support, information sharing and partnership working across NHS Scotland and beyond. As part of the programme, each participant must select, complete and report an improvement project. Academy faculty will provide consultation and support for this important hands-on experience. These projects will likely be starting points for more ambitious endeavours in participants' base clinical unit or care setting.
